Monday Motivation: Installment 50
I’m not sure when I decided I wanted to be big and strong, but it was shortly after I finished my cross-country career at Marquette high school. The completion of my cross-country career also happened to be the completion of running for the rest of my life.*
While running long-distance gave me great discipline, it also gave me more slow-twitch muscle fibers than I could handle!
During the spring semester of my senior year of high school, I was motivated to transform. I would be heading off to the University of Evansville in the fall and I was ready for a new chapter in my life. A fresh start, if you will, which I think a lot of people desire when they leave for college. I wanted to ditch the skinny runner image and who I used to be, and become a monster.
And while I won’t exactly be mistaken for The Rock anytime soon, I did get a lot bigger…60 pounds bigger, exactly. It actually baffles me how I was able to hold my gigantic head up when I weighed just a shade under 150.
Maybe that’s why I always had right IT band issues…my head was always tilting that way, creating a significant weight imbalance…
While it sounds cliché, the added size and strength gave me much more confidence in my personal and professional life. There was something about being able to “own” the weight-room that transferred over to social fearlessness. An acquaintance of mine told me the other day that when he is asked what advice he would give on being able to speak more confidently in front of people, he tells them to lift weights.
It’s funny, but I think it definitely has merit.
I got into personal training, not because I simply loved helping people change for the better, but because I knew it would push me outside of my comfort zone. It would challenge me, which it definitely does to a great degree to this day. Coaching someone one-on-one never came easy to me, but the rewards of making myself better each and every day have been immense, and it’s only the beginning. I can’t imagine working in a field as personal as this, where you need top-notch interpersonal skills to be successful, without having decided to transform myself.
I would still be wrapped up in my books and my computer, content to fly under the radar and not be noticed.
Stepping on stage at the Mr. Southern Indiana my junior year of college was the culmination of my transformation.
I competed to win, of course, but for me, the ultimate victory was getting on stage and proving to myself that I could do it. That I could completely change myself if I set my mind to it, both with my physique and my personality.
Knowing that I have that power over myself to change is incredibly gratifying. You have it, too.
I’m passionate about helping others transform because I know the rewards of the discipline and sacrifice. And I like sharing my story, because it’s through hearing and reading about others’ successes that gave me the moxie to pursue my own.
That’s why this site isn’t just about fitness. And why my 5-day Physique Transformation e-course doesn’t focus on what specific program you should be following or what your macronutrient levels should be.
Because truly transforming yourself is much more than that.
It’s much more than getting a six-pack or putting 50 pounds on your deadlift.
What does the “much more” entail?
Well, I will let my 5-day e-course talk about the rest. If you haven’t already signed up to get it, you definitely should.
Outside of being absolutely FREE, I reveal the following;
#1: The key to the physique of your dreams
#2: Why you REALLY aren’t getting results…and how to achieve them
#3: A NEW-AGE approach to weight-loss (hint: it doesn’t involve trying to lose weight)
If you are interested in being your best, then I really think you will get a lot out of the course. It’s basically all the principles I do my best to adhere to on a daily basis and the lessons I impart to the clients I work with.
Check it out below and let me know what you think.

*I actually ran a 10K the other week (client convinced me to do it with them), which was my longest run since my cross-country days. I did surprisingly well (aka I did not pass out or vomit). I felt strong throughout, so yay for doing lots of deadlifts and squats!
Another client convinced me to do one with them on April 5th…this cannot become a recurring thing!
