Client Spotlight: David Scott
Last week, I started up with a “Client Spotlight” series, where each week I will feature at least one amazeballs client of mine who has just dominated their training and gone above and beyond.
They are an inspiration to me, so I want to give them some public recognition and hopefully inspire a few of you out there!
Today, I want to shine the light on my man, David Scott. David is an online client and we met through my brother-in-law (he lives in Ohio). As you can see below, we got well-acquainted when he came out to LA for said bro-in-law’s bachelor party (he is the one holding my waist).
He had a bad shoulder injury that required surgery last year and he had been doing physical therapy for a few months when he sent me the text,
“You better be ready for me when I am done with PT.”
Well…challenge accepted.
With long-distance clients, working with “fresh” injuries can be a major concern because you obviously can’t monitor their form and these types of clients need very close monitoring.
However, I had confidence that he would follow every instruction to the T and that as long as I specified things enough, everything would be great.
And it was!
Suffice to say, David committed to the program 100%, brought his shoulder back to health (he is throwing things now!), and now we are working on dialing in his nutrition to transform his body.
He also loves making eye contact with strangers while doing hip thrusts. It brings great joy to me when he says this happens and I think it would make for a great video series one day.
ANYwho…I’ll let David take it from here…
What was your previous exposure with exercise like?
In one word…SPORADIC!
I would go through phases where I would exercise and eat healthy for a period of time and feel like I did enough to make myself healthy again, and then I would fall back into my old routine of lounging around and occasionally going for a run when I felt like I needed to.
How would you say you felt about your body and life before you started training?
Again, in one word…ACCEPTABLE!
Now that I look back at my life before starting this training method, I have noticed that acceptable was not where I wanted to be, it was just easier.
Over the course of the program, what would you say were the biggest benefits you received?
Constant contact with Kasey.
(that’s me)
On a weekly basis, we have conversations via email and text discussing best eating practices, what kind of items at the grocery store are better than others….as well as convos regarding why the guy next to me is on his phone telling his “girlfriend” how much he misses her, instead of focusing and freeing up the exercise bike so another patron can get a ride in.
Strict schedule is the other big thing. Without the training regime Kasey set-up, I would just go to the gym and work out the body parts I felt needed it, instead of training my entire body. Each time I go into the gym now, I have a plan in place and once I complete it, I’m able to go home feeling like I put in a full workout.
Nutritionally, what would you say has had the biggest influence on your success to this point?
Removing the junk food and replacing it with healthier options. I was never the person to replace a cheeseburger with a salad and a Coke with a big glass of water (with a splash of the delightful Crystal Light liquid), but now that I have changed my overall attitude, I find it easier to make the healthy choices without hesitation.
Online training is tough for a lot of people because the trainer/coach is not there in-person to provide accountability. How did you stick with the program when times got busy/stressful?
When times started getting crazy, I used this program as a release. It allowed me to get away from everything and clear my head. I also believe if Kasey is willing to put in the time to create a workout program to help me, it is my duty to follow through with the process and ensure he receives the feedback he requires to make him a better trainer.
Numerically, at what weight did you start at and what pant size versus now?
Starting Weight = 226lb.
Starting Pant Size = 34-35
Current Weight = 212lb.
Current Pant Size = 33-34 (goal of 32-33)
(I will add that, while I haven’t been able to exactly measure, he has put on a significant amount of muscle, as well)
(And also…I thought I had a before pic of David, but trust me when I say he looks WAY better now)
What would you say to someone who is skeptical of online training, particularly those who are coming off of injuries?
This kind of practice is not something you want to take lightly, especially if you are coming off of an injury/surgery. I had surgery on my shoulder in February 2014 from an injury I sustained years ago. My ultimate goal going into the surgery was to be able to use my shoulder in everyday activities without any pain.
Not only has that goal been achieved following Kasey’s program (and a few months of physical therapy), but I have since increased expectations for myself.
As long as you are determined, it doesn’t matter if it is an online training or an in-person training, it all comes down to whether you are willing to put in the time to make a better/stronger/healthier you.
What is the next step for you and your goals?
Mr. Universe…just kidding!
My goals have not changed. I have just increased the expectations I have for myself.
I am currently 6 months into the training with Kasey and intend to stay the course. I am not the type of person who wants to get JACKED, but I want to try and inspire others to adopt a cleaner lifestyle while still being able to enjoy themselves.
What’s your view on the hip thrust?
It’s not for me, it’s for the ladies!!
Wrap-Up
As you can tell, we have quite a bit of fun.
Like he said, whether you have a coach or not, you simply have to PUT THE TIME IN. There is no magic bullet.
His story demonstrates that if you are patient and just follow a program, great things will happen and you won’t rush yourself back to the doctor. Instead, you will build a foundation that will stand strong for years to come.
